Chevrolet introduced the El Camino in 1959 as a result of a suggestion from automotive great Harley Earl. The "Coupe Utility" was based on the Brookwood two-door station wagon and offered a full-sized pickup bed in a highly styled, low-slung sedan body. The vehicle was an immediate success, outselling its Ford competitor, the Rancher,o nearly 2 to 1. The second generation, starting in 1964, was based on the Chevelle chassis but initially did not offer the high-horsepower Chevelle powerplants.
