The C5 Corvette is one of the most important generations in the car's history, and it almost never happened. GM came within arm's length of canceling the program entirely before a group of engineers and executives inside the company fought to keep it alive. What they saved was a car that debuted to widespread praise, won Motor Trend Car of the Year and North American Car of the Year for 1998, and rewrote what people expected from an American sports car.
